How to Get the Attention You Deserve for Your Passion

So, you are attempting to spread your wings.  Maybe you have recently left Corporate America.  Maybe you are a mother who is now rejoining the work force. Are you interested in taking your business to the next level?  Is this business your passion?  Do you love what you do?  Would you like to take a stand on a community issue?  Is there an organization, service group, or business that you have an interest in?  Do you want to tell us about your passion?  How about writing an article or a book?

Now, if I have taken you this far, please continue.  Agree to read this paragraph.  After ward, if you would like to stop, then stop.  My story is as follows.  I did not think I could write.  The best thing to happen to me in the 1990’s was spell check (and grammar check) on the computer.  I used to say, “I am not a writer.”  However I have written over 80 articles, two e-books, and three bound books.  My articles are published in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet.  Anyone can write a book about what they are passionate about.  Books and articles give you credibility beyond your wildest dreams.

So, how do you get started?  Choose a topic for which you have feelings.  First step, record the topic on a piece of paper (for those of you who prefer your computer, start with your thoughts there.)  This is not the title.  The title comes next.  Write it in a place where you will retrieve it later.  I use a spiral notebook.  In the notebook are the topics for numerous articles to come.  I carry it with me during the business day.  When I am between appointments I write.  I write a paragraph at a time.  If you can write a paragraph in 15 minutes you can easily write an article every 30 days.  In a year you will create 12 articles just by using 15 minute blocks of spare time.  It is worth it!

Why is it worth the time?  In a word, CREDIBILITY.  Being able to say that you write articles or have published a book is very powerful.  Much like public speaking, those who have written books enjoy a credibility that is earned.  What is also nice about these articles and books is my only investments are time, energy, and creativity.  I have not invested any money.  Once you have an article or a book you now have something of value to offer your clients, potential clients, or those who might send you clients.  I can make my offer of something of value when speaking, when meeting someone for the first time, or on a regular scheduled frequency.  It is never a sales pitch.  It is always something to help them in their business.

What does giving something of value do?  It builds relationships.  Remember, it is never a sales piece.  As people read my e-book they are getting helpful tips to attract the right prospects and generate more referrals.  Helping people grow their business with a return on your investment for stronger relationships is very powerful.  Giving this information also gives you a reason to generate additional conversation.  A call for questions and clarification is appropriate.  Another opportunity to build that relationship as we get closer to making the sale is available through the gift of something of business value.  Once an article or book is created it can be used again and again to build new relationships.

Please remember this is for your credibility due to your passion.  I encourage you to do this because of how good you will feel.  The article or book documents your place in time.  You may review your article or book 10 years from now, seeing how different your opinions are then from now.  What a great way to mark your growth.
