Too Much Business in a Down Economy!

How many of you are getting these calls from your clients?  “Hello Gerry.  I have too much business.  Help!”

Now you might be saying that if this person is selling rope to make hangman’s collars, then that might be someone who could be selling more rope than they could make.  Or maybe it is the person who is selling red ink?  Then, when you find out that this person sells lessons to play one musical instrument, my comment is, “Are you kidding?”  This is a true story.

When you consider the economy, what are the first things to go?  The first things to go are non-essentials.  For me, lessons on a musical instrument would be non-essential.   Food, clothing, housing, and transportation come first.  S, why is it that this person not only continues to be successful, and is growing their business now?  The answers are below.

First, they learned their craft well.  Having a great service that is positioned to sell for a price that is competitive is extremely important.  That is to say that people who price their service below market value attract people who are looking for a bargain.  If they can find that service for a dollar or two less, they will purchase the discounted service.  When you are priced correctly, selling a service with value, you will develop a loyal client base.  A loyal client base that receives good service priced right will refer business.  The next point is referred business.

This entrepreneur is referred all new business.  There is no marketing or advertising budget.  All the work is done by word of mouth.  There are systems of communication to add value to the service provided.  People staying in touch with people who want to help grow the success of a business. When a customer believes in that business they are willing to take a stake in the business’ continued success.  The satisfied customer sends their friends.  The customer that is extremely satisfied stays a customer for life and will send their friends and family.

This business owner is very passionate about this business.  She is clear on what she wants in her business, her personal life, and her spirituality.  Believe me when I say that in this case it is definitely not about the money.  This person has such a great belief in making a difference in people’s lives that I believe she would give this away. However, because of the impact she delivers, her product changes people’s lives. She also realizes that there is value in her service, so she charges a reasonable fee.

So what can we learn to make our “more” essential businesses thrive in economic times?  The easy answer is, follow the recipe above.  For now you can:

  • Call everyone in your circle of influence and ask for what you need now
  • Repeat this every 30 days for the next year
  • A better way is meet face to face every 30 days asking the same question
  • Then start to evaluate and implement the story above
