Getting Help in Your Business
“Nothing great happens alone.” Powerful statement. I believe that until an entrepreneur fully understands, embodies, and owns this concept the chance of true success is limited. I have witnessed more people attempt to travel the business journey by themselves to only fail. However, those who succeed the quickest embrace support from others.
Frequently a trusted advisor can be as close as a business partner. The best ideas come from interaction of more than one mind. Someone who has a vested financial interest can often put their heart, soul, and mind into success. The limit can be that partners are often too close to the process. They might miss the essence of the future current needs while addressing the needs of the day to day operation.
A mentor, someone who can be used as an answer source, can guide us in our decisions. Some will come to us for a fee. Some will come to us for free. Fee or free are both great. Remember, a mentor helps with decisions but does not make decisions. You, as the owner, make all final decisions. The payout comes when we access how their support moves our organization forward.
Some business owners choose to assemble a board of directors. This can be done in a formal capacity. When formally assembled, decisions can be legally binding, directed by Robert’s Rules of order, and be bound by Parliamentary procedures. A less formal arrangement can be determined which leaves final decisions in the hands of the business founder.
The most frustrating part of this concept is the entrepreneur whose life experience is such that they cannot accept it and totally reject the idea of being helped. Many business professionals are appalled by the idea. Asking for help is frequently perceived as negative. There is something about being an adult and asking for help that interferes with our success. Frankly, I do not understand. We deprive people the pleasure of giving the satisfaction of helping us succeed when we ask for help. Consider this the next time you have the opportunity to ask for something you need now; if given the opportunity to help you to realize success or the alternative, not asking for help, you deprive the giver of help (and support) the pleasure of seeing you succeed. If you were to ask me for help which leads you to a $1,000,000 success, imagine the satisfaction I would have directing you there.
In conclusion, GET HELP. Be it for fee or free ask for help. Just as when giving to receive to give again, ask to be answered to ask again. Put yourself in a position to being successful so that you help others be successful.
