For those of you who are Idea People, this article is for you.

As usual, it seems like groups of people come to me at one time.  Recently there were three who came to me in the span of a week.  One sells healthy consumables.  Another offers a home service.  The third is a software developer that has the potential to take his idea to an Initial Public Offering.  All three have one thing in common…a lot of ‘white’ noise.

The ideas we have floating around in our heads which keep us from focusing on our business, is the ‘white’ noise to which I am referring.

In the case of the healthy consumable, I was brought into the project AFTER the client lost an $80,000 account.  Many ideas were discussed to create new business.  Traction was gained when positive results were attained by Internet advertising.  The Internet marketing became an innovative idea to market an existing product.  This business owner was able to direct the ‘white’ noise to increased success and affect the bottom line positively.

The in home service provider went from zero income in November of 2010 to $500,000 by July 1, 2011.  White noise was created because of SUCCESS.  Too much business arrived with lightening speed which was encumbered by too many new good ideas, which created high levels of stress.  Success breeds success which can also create ‘white’ noise!  Too little time in a day to move the company forward created more stress.

The software developer suffered from’ white’ noise as it became obvious his new idea was not patentable.  He was close to scrubbing the idea versus looking at other options.

To avoid white noise:

  • Write your ideas, making lists of things to do with clear results.
  • Use other experts as a sounding board to help with the writing of ideas.
  • Invest in activities that clear your head.  Exercise, vacation, rest, and relaxation
  • Learn how to control your thoughts.  The first step is understand that only you are responsible for what is in your mind.
  • Be clear on your results and flexible to change those results.

It is so easy to get distracted.  Lately, I have been working on a new strategy.  I became aware of how networking organizations like chambers of commerce and referral groups remove the ‘white’ noise for us.  They provide us three things to remove ‘white’ noise:

  1. Time allotment for our meetings
  2. A convenient place to meet
  3. People to meet

When we can organize/control our time, our space, and contacts to engage with, we can control the ‘white’ noise.  Discipline is the key to successfully control the ‘white’ noise.

Please be clear that some ‘white’ noise helps with creativity.  We need to be thinking all the time to create new ideas.  The healthy consumable business owner might have remained stuck without ‘white’ noise.  The idea of marketing on the Internet allowed forward movement to success.  White noise can stimulate success as long as it is organized.  Consider journaling the ideas that come from ‘white’ noise.  Use meditation to consider the ‘white’ noise.  Some of my best ideas/results come from when I pray early in the morning, or while I am running alone.  What is your method of freeing yourself of ‘white’ noise?
