How Important is it to have the Highest Morals, Values, and Ethics while Finding Work in a Down Economy?
As I write this I know of nearly a dozen friends and business associates who have been downsized due to the economy. Many people are predicting that the economy will get worse before it gets better. I know numbers of employers who are looking for the “right fit” as they take this down economy and look for new employees to expand their businesses. Most believe that this is a great time to pick up good employees who have been let go due to the economy.
Recently, a family friend told me of her neighbor who had been downsized due to the economy. I had our friend forward this neighbor’s resume to me for review. After reviewing the resume and speaking with the job candidate, I was able to forward it to a business associate in the pharmaceutical industry. Through my connection this person has been considered for an opening in this firm. All was in a timely professional manner, completed in less than 14 days.
In another instance, I worked to connect an individual in an area where he had an opportunity for a minimum of three business opportunities. The purpose of our meeting was to review the three job openings I was aware of and then refer him to the hiring managers. We set an appointment two weeks in advance to fit his schedule. We assigned a meeting time of 2 PM to meet in my office in Carlsbad. As this meeting was to be in the mid-afternoon in north San Diego County, I did some morning business in south San Diego. Completing my morning business, I was driving to the meeting place. At 1:28 PM I received a telephone call from his wife. She told me that her husband sent her a text message. He said that he was stuck in a meeting and would not be able to make our appointment. We would have to reschedule.
I wonder how many of you would have rescheduled this appointment? (If you would like to respond to this I would love to read your responses.) My first thought was that I could have spent the time with my last client helping them grow their business rather than driving to an appointment that was to be canceled. My second thought is that I am referring this person to other business owners to help them in their business. What if he text messages his wife to tell her to tell them that he is tied up in a meeting and will be unable to attend the interview? What happens to his credibility (and my own) with this potential employer? Will this person destroy my ability to help future job candidates by his lack of consideration?
The bigger question might be, “ Would this person ever find the right job?” I know that in my days of being an employee I would always be timely (usually 15 minutes early) for an appointment. Especially in a down economy, I would be extra eager to make the best first impression.
There are many unknowns with an economy like this. I believe there are four keys to success to go beyond survival in these times. I believe if you follow these four keys below, you can realize the greatest of life’s financial success today. They are:
- Work with people of the highest morals, values, and ethics
- Give to receive to give again
- Believe in collaboration versus competition
- Work from a place of abundance versus lack
These above are the Four Pillars of INTEGRITY. Often it might be said that these standards are too high to follow. We say now more than ever to be successful it is important to realize how these can help one find financial success sooner than later. That first paycheck could be the difference between being on the streets or sleeping in you own bed. It is a decision that is easy to make.
