How to Write Books and Articles in Your Spare Time.
For the seven minute Toastmaster video go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG3nOUWTd74&feature=youtu.be
If you have a book in your heart, and the reason it is not on paper (or an e-book) is because of one of the following:
- Lack of time to write the book (or article)
- I am illiterate
- I cannot write
- My grammar is terrible
- I am poor at punctuation
- English is my second language
- I need to finish my General Education Development
…then this article is for you!
First, let’s address the numbers two through seven above. For as little as $25 per hour, you can hire an editor (or marry one like I did) to edit your books and articles. This now leaves only one reason, you lack the time.
Whenever I want to write, I do it in small increments. Even as I write this today, I have been doing it in small increments. I will write a sentence. Place a video. Review a video. Change a title. Nothing says that you have to sit down in one place and write for an hour or more.
I write when waiting for clients to arrive for an appointment, when I am 15 minutes early, or they are 15 minutes late. In the past I carried a notebook to write my thoughts. I kept it available, with open pages for adding a phrase, a paragraph, full article, or chapter of a book. I can write one sentence and stop. So can you.
Some writers will carry their laptop and write during commute time on the bus or train. It can be very relaxing and stimulating to write in new places. It is especially stimulating to write after an emotional experience. When a prospect or client has done something to stimulate me, I find it a wonderful release to jot down a page or two in 15 minutes. The juices really get flowing when you can add a little emotional Mojo to the piece you are writing.
For those of you who travel by airplane, airports and sitting for hours in flight can be well rewarded by writing during your travel. You can become extremely focused on your task, and at the same time take breaks in between. Writing can cause the creative juices to flow, and then at some point they can stop. Closing your eyes, leaning back in your seat, and taking a short nap can lend itself to creating deeper thought and greater productivity.
Writing on paper or writing on your laptop can be a stumbling block. I like both. Writing on paper makes me slow down. Then putting the paper into the computer allows me a second chance to get it right. When writing on the computer I have the benefit of spell check or the curse of spell check. We all know that correct spelling can also mean wrong word usage! That is why we hire (or marry) someone who can edit our work.
The struggle for many as you read this article is that there are so many other things that you would like more time. Recently we have added the phrase bucket list to the vocabulary to describe things we have yet to do before we die. When you add to your list writing your book, completing your book, and publishing your book the exhilaration you will feel each step of the way will reward you in ways that deliver indescribable feelings! I am feeling them now.
