The President Called. I Got the Job!
Imagine if the president of the United States called and said, “You got the job!” That would make me feel wonderful. It would be the highest of highs ever. The flood of positive emotion would be over whelming. Adrenaline would seem to be able to last forever. Nights would be sleepless in anticipation of starting the new job working for the President.
I received the call that brought those feelings to me. You see, I belong to a non-profit organization where I am very active. All of what we do is on a volunteer basis. We receive no financial compensation. Many would say I contribute a lot of my time, energy, and creativity to this organization. I am always looking for ways to improve my performance and the performance of others. Some seek me out to mentor them as they work through the different functions and levels within this organization.
Last week, in the normal line of duty, I did a little “outside the box” activity. Using my email, I sent a communication to all the members of the organization. In my 15 years of membership no one has ever done this. Within ten minutes I had a telephone call from one of our newest members. I will remember the words he used for a long time. The words were, “Gerry, you must be very good at what you do. If I ever need the service you provide” I will buy it as long as I can afford it.”
Now some of you reading this you might ask, “What is the big deal?” We are being evaluated as volunteers by our peers, superiors, and subordinates. Many of us believe that we can perform at a lower level as volunteers almost as if the time we invest “just does not count.” As volunteers we make commitments and believe it is okay at the last minute to “excuse ourselves” to let someone else (or no one else) complete the project.
In addition, the recognition my fellow member shared with me made me feel like I was on the top of the world. The call got my juices flowing. I want to do more for this person and the rest of the team. My fellow member started us on a path of future success between us. The bond that we will create from the outreach of telling me I did a good job will be strengthened over time. People need to do more of this on and off the job. Imagine your work place being a place where everyone extends compliments to each other. Your volunteer/service organization would perform at a higher level when everyone recognizes individual success. I am talking about one to one recognition versus the group recognizing one individual’s success. There is definitely a place for individual recognition; however, every day team recognition paves a road for the ultimate success.
Getting a call like this can put you on “Cloud Nine.” As we go through our daily lives I am sure everyone reading this article strives to do their best. Maybe it is as a volunteer, or it is in your career that you are doing what it takes to be the star. Your best will allow you to one day get the call from the President saying, “You got the job!”
